SLS-Free Toothpaste: Why Some People Switch
SLS is sodium lauryl sulfate, the detergent that makes toothpaste foam. People switch to SLS-free toothpaste mainly because SLS has been linked to canker sores and mouth irritation in some users. The foam does no cleaning work, so removing it costs you nothing in protection.
What SLS does and does not do
SLS is a surfactant. Its job is to create lather and help spread paste around your mouth. It does not remineralize enamel or kill the bacteria behind cavities. That work comes from the active ingredients, whether that is fluoride or hydroxyapatite toothpaste.
Because the foam is cosmetic, an SLS-free paste can protect your teeth exactly as well as a foaming one. The difference is comfort, not chemistry.
Why some people switch
The most cited reason is canker sores. Some studies have reported fewer recurrent mouth ulcers when people stop using SLS toothpaste, though the evidence is mixed and not settled. If you get frequent ulcers, a trial switch is a low-risk experiment worth discussing with your dentist.
SLS can also cause a dry, stripped feeling, and it is known to dull taste briefly, which is why food can taste off right after brushing. People with sensitive tissue or dry mouth often prefer the gentler feel of an SLS-free formula.
What to check on the label
