Sonicare replacement heads: which one fits your handle

Almost every current Sonicare handle takes the same click-on brush head. If yours is a 1000 through 9900 series handle, any click-on head snaps straight on. The handles that break the pattern are the older screw-on Essence and Xtreme models and the Philips One, which use fittings of their own.

That split is what most product listings leave out, and it is why so many multipacks end up going back.

Start with the model number on the base of the handle

Philips prints a code such as HX6810 on the bottom of the handle. That code decides which head fits, not the retail name on the box.

Philips writes those codes with a trailing x in its own compatibility tables, because the final character only encodes the color of the handle.

Model numbers below are the ones Philips publishes on its support page “Which brush head fits my Sonicare toothbrush”. Keep that table open next to any head sold as universal.

Kids heads are worth a second look. Philips states they fit every click-on toothbrush, so a smaller head on an adult handle is a legitimate choice if you want a tighter footprint and softer bristles.

Head style changes the bristle, not the fit

Inside the click-on family, the gap between Premium Plaque Control, Premium Gum Care, Premium White and the older ProResults heads is bristle shape and density. All of them mount the same way.

So choosing a head is a bristle decision rather than a fit decision, which is the same reasoning that separates a manual and electric toothbrush on enamel, only one level further down.

How long a head should stay on

Philips puts the replacement interval at three months. Splayed or flattened bristles are the practical cue, and our guide to when to swap replacement heads covers what that wear actually looks like.

The same rhythm carries over to a manual brush, which is set out in how often to replace your toothbrush.

Where third-party heads fit and where they stop

Generic click-on heads are sold in volume and physically mount on most click-on handles. What they do not carry is the BrushSync chip Philips builds into its Premium heads, so a handle with head-replacement tracking will not register the swap.

Fit is not universal either. If your handle is an Essence or an Xtreme, a click-on generic will not thread on at all, whatever the listing says.
