Purple teeth whitening strips: how the color trick works
Purple teeth whitening strips do not bleach anything. They lay a violet pigment over the tooth surface so the yellow tones you see read as less yellow, the same trick as purple shampoo on brassy hair. The effect is cosmetic, sits on the surface, and fades as the pigment wears off. Standard peroxide strips change the color of the tooth itself. This is general information, not dental advice.
Violet cancels yellow on the color wheel
Purple and yellow sit opposite each other on the color wheel, so a thin violet layer neutralizes the warm cast and your teeth look a shade cooler and brighter. Hismile describes its V34 Colour Corrector as working like concealer for teeth: it temporarily conceals yellow tones, acts entirely on the tooth surface, and is meant to be reapplied as needed. Strips deliver that pigment in gel form instead of a serum.
Nothing chemical happens inside the enamel. Rinse, eat, drink coffee, and the perceived whitening goes with the pigment.
Peroxide strips work differently

Conventional strips hold hydrogen peroxide against the tooth. The American Dental Association explains that peroxide diffuses through enamel and oxidizes the colored compounds inside, which is why it can lighten both surface and deeper stain. Most whitening strips rely primarily on peroxide, per the same ADA overview, and the documented trade-off is temporary sensitivity and gum irritation.
Crest 3DWhitestrips Professional White lists hydrogen peroxide as its active ingredient, with manufacturer directions of 45 minutes once a day for 20 days. That is a bleaching schedule. Some purple strips blend both ideas: Hismile V34 Whitening Strips pair the violet pigment with PAP+, a peroxide-free stain lifter, and the brand cites its own 30 minute application. Dr Snow V34 Purple Whitening Strips make a similar dual claim of instant color correction plus surface stain work. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent trials.

Who should pick which
If you want a quick visual boost before an event and have no interest in bleaching, purple strips do the job for a few hours and carry none of the peroxide sensitivity risk. If you want your teeth to actually be lighter next month, only peroxide does that, and you should read up on white spots on teeth after whitening strips before you start a course.
Purple strips also suit people who have ruled out bleaching. They pair well with the options covered in our guide to how to whiten teeth without peroxide, and with a mildly abrasive paste from our best whitening toothpaste roundup for the surface stain the pigment cannot hide.
One caveat the marketing skips: violet pigment cannot correct grey or brown discoloration, because those tones are not opposite purple on the color wheel. Test one strip at home before you rely on it for photos.
Safety in plain terms
Purple strips are peroxide-free, so the ADA’s list of bleaching side effects does not apply. The pigment is a cosmetic dye, and some users report temporary purple staining of gums or lips that rinses away. Crowns, veneers and fillings will not bleach with peroxide, per Crest’s own label, and a pigment film may sit unevenly on them too. Ask your dentist if you have dental work on your front teeth.
