Teeth whitening at home: what actually works, by method
Ranked by evidence: peroxide strips and dentist-dispensed trays have the strongest support for whitening teeth at home. Whitening pens sit far behind, LED kits mostly add cost to a gel that would work anyway, and whitening toothpaste removes surface stain rather than bleaching anything. Peroxide is the working ingredient
Hydrogen peroxide bleaches both surface and deeper stain by oxidizing pigment molecules. Carbamide peroxide is the slower-release form, breaking down into hydrogen peroxide in the mouth. Concentration times contact time predicts results better than any marketing claim on the box. In the EU, home products are capped at 6 percent hydrogen peroxide under Directive 2011/84/EU, which is a useful ceiling to keep in mind wherever you shop.
Strips and trays
Strips hold a peroxide layer against the teeth for a fixed session. Manufacturer directions for the common Crest 3D Whitestrips lines call for 30 minute daily sessions over roughly two weeks, and the peroxide content of over the counter US strips runs below the EU home cap, per package labeling. Trays go the other direction: dentist-dispensed kits like Opalescence go list 10 to 20 percent carbamide peroxide on Ultradent’s labeling, worn 30 to 60 minutes daily for five to ten days. Trays win on even coverage and on whitening between teeth where strips struggle; strips win on price and on not needing a dental visit first.

What mostly does not work
Pens paint a thin peroxide film that saliva washes away within minutes, and no independent trials support their results. LED kits bundle a peroxide gel with a blue light, but published comparisons of light-activated versus peroxide-alone whitening find little consistent added benefit and occasionally report extra sensitivity, so you are largely paying for the gel and a gadget. Where home whitening fails
Grey undertones, thin translucent enamel, and exposed dentin at the gumline respond poorly, and tetracycline staining does not move with home concentrations at all. Sensitivity is the most common reason people abandon a strip cycle, and pushing past the labeled schedule in pursuit of faster results raises the risk of white spot irregularities rather than a better shade. Home kits lighten natural enamel a few shades and then stop; anything beyond that is dental-office territory, in both concentration and cost.
