Dog dental cleaning cost: what drives the price range

A routine dog dental cleaning in the United States averages $388, with a published range of $307 to $702, according to the 2025 ASQ360 cost study CareCredit cites. That covers anesthesia, scaling and polishing on a dog with a reasonably healthy mouth. Four line items push the bill past that band: bloodwork, dental X-rays, extractions and where you live.

This is general cost information, not veterinary advice. Only your vet’s written estimate applies to your dog.

What the base fee buys

Every full-service cleaning is done under general anesthesia. A breathing tube is placed, then a technician scales plaque and tartar above and below the gumline and polishes. The base fee pays for the drugs, the monitoring and that scaling time.

PetMD puts a basic cleaning by a general practice vet at $350 to $500. Lakeside Animal Hospital in Plantation, Florida publishes $300 to $700 for a standard prophylaxis. Both ranges sit close to the CareCredit national figure.

If your dog’s mouth is already crusted with tartar, read about tartar removal for dogs at home versus at the vet first. Heavy buildup means more scaling time and likely extractions.

The four cost drivers

Pre-anesthetic bloodwork

A blood panel checks kidney and liver function before your dog goes under. PetMD lists it at $75 for a young, healthy dog up to $200 for a senior or a dog with known conditions. Some clinics fold it into the quote, others bill it separately.

Dental X-rays

Roughly half of each tooth sits below the gumline, so radiographs are the only way to see bone loss, fractured roots or dead teeth. Lakeside Animal Hospital lists them as a separate line item. A quote without X-rays is a different scope of care, not a bargain.

Extractions

Extractions are billed per tooth and are the biggest swing factor. Lakeside says a simple extraction adds $50 to $150, with surgical extractions costing more. PetMD gives a wider $500 to $2,500 per tooth range that covers surgical work on large, multi-rooted teeth.

Lakeside publishes $700 to $1,200 or more for a Broward County visit with extractions and full diagnostics. PetMD cites $1,500 or more when a board-certified veterinary dentist handles advanced cases.

Your state

CareCredit’s state table shows a dog cleaning averaging $310 in Mississippi and $696 in Hawaii. Massachusetts ($543), the District of Columbia ($524) and California ($518) sit at the high end.

How to read a dental estimate

Ask each clinic four questions: is bloodwork included, are full-mouth X-rays included, is anesthesia monitored continuously, and what does each extraction cost. Two quotes $300 apart often differ in what is left out, not in the cleaning itself.

Expect the final number to move after the X-rays, since hidden problems only show up once your dog is under. A good clinic calls you before pulling anything.

Between cleanings, daily brushing slows the tartar that drives extraction costs. The dental chews versus toothpaste for dogs comparison covers what each one actually removes.

If you also have a cat, the cat dental cleaning cost breakdown uses the same CareCredit survey, and the feline figures run a few dollars lower in almost every state.
