Super floss: how the three-section floss works around braces and bridges
Super floss is a pre-cut strand with three sections: a stiff end you push under wires and bridges, a spongy middle for wide gaps, and a regular floss tail for the gumline. One strand replaces the loop-and-floss routine that braces otherwise demand. It cleans around appliances, but it does not make flossing optional.
Here is how the three sections work, how Oral-B Super Floss compares with a threader and a water flosser, and who should skip it.
How the three sections of super floss work
Oral-B describes the sections this way: a stiffened end to floss under appliances, spongy floss to clean around appliances and in wide spaces, and regular floss to help remove plaque under the gumline.
You feed the stiff end under the archwire or beneath the bridge, then pull the strand through. The spongy part scrubs the sides of brackets, the bridge and any wide gap, and the plain tail finishes the tight space between two natural teeth.

Super floss vs floss threaders vs water flossers
The American Dental Association recommends cleaning between your teeth once a day, and says people with braces or bridges may find a water flosser helps them reach every nook. A threader works with any floss you already own. Super floss bundles both parts into one strand.
| Option | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Oral-B Super Floss | 50 pre-cut strands, mint flavor, stiff end plus spongy section plus regular floss | Oral-B product page |
| Floss threader plus your own floss | Any floss you own: break off 12 to 18 inches, about 5 inches run through the loop, threader discarded after use | Colgate guide |
| Water flosser | A stream of water that rinses away food and plaque, suggested for people who find other tools hard to use | ADA MouthHealthy |
The spongy section is the main difference. Colgate notes that braces and other devices can fray floss and force you to start over, which is the problem a stiffened, sponge-bodied strand is meant to avoid.
Strand length is not stated on the Oral-B page, and Oral-B listed the product as out of stock when checked in October 2026. Prices are set by each retailer.
Who super floss suits and who should look elsewhere
It suits fixed braces, permanent retainers, bridges and wide gaps where a thin floss slips through without touching anything. A dentist or orthodontist can show you the angle for your own wires.
If you already floss with picks, the guide to floss picks for braces covers the other end of the range. For the water option, do water flossers replace flossing weighs the evidence.
Brushing still matters at the brackets too. A hydroxyapatite toothpaste for braces is one option worth discussing with your orthodontist. This article is general information, not dental advice.
