Teeth hurt after whitening strips: why it happens and how long it lasts
Teeth hurt after whitening strips because peroxide passes through the enamel into the dentin and can irritate the nerve. The ADA says sensitivity is temporary in most cases, and sources that give a number say it fades within days.
If the pain lasts longer than that, or becomes sharp enough to interfere with eating, stop the strips and ask your dentist.
Why whitening strips make teeth sensitive
An EU scientific committee opinion on hydrogen peroxide in tooth whitening notes that peroxide is taken up into the pulp from 6% consumer systems and from 30 to 35% in-office treatments. A review in PMC describes sensitivity as the result of peroxide and its products reaching the pulp chamber and causing an inflammatory response.
That reaction explains the zing you feel with cold air or water. It does not by itself mean your enamel is damaged, although the ADA warns that overuse can harm enamel or gums.

How common it is, and how long it lasts
In data summarised in the EU committee opinion, 44% of people using 6% hydrogen peroxide strips reported tooth sensitivity, and 59% reported it with 9.5% strips. Those are trial figures for that submission, not a forecast for your teeth.
For duration, GoodRx says sensitivity after whitening should only last a few days, and one dental practice says over-the-counter strips can leave mild pain for up to a week. Neither is a controlled measurement.

Crest says most products, its own included, do not disclose peroxide levels, so the label alone will not tell you how strong a strip is. Wear times above come from each maker’s directions.
What to do while your teeth hurt
Stop wearing strips until the discomfort passes, then try again. The ADA suggests you can delay treatment and retry, and that you should follow the directions exactly.
White marks on the front teeth are a separate issue from nerve pain, and the guide to white spots on teeth after whitening strips explains them.
Some people reach for a desensitising paste. Compare potassium nitrate vs hydroxyapatite for sensitivity to see how the two approaches differ.
Sensitivity that predates whitening has its own list of causes, covered in what causes tooth sensitivity. Crest also notes that gum disease and cavities usually need treating before whitening.
