Boka Toothpaste Review: What the Nano-Hydroxyapatite Formula Does (and 3 Things It Does Not)

Boka toothpaste review: white toothpaste tube beside a bamboo toothbrush with a pea-sized dab of paste

Boka is a fluoride-free toothpaste that uses nano-hydroxyapatite where most pastes use fluoride, and it lists at $11.62 for a 4 oz tube on Boka’s own site. It fits you if you want to skip fluoride by choice. If you want the longest-proven cavity protection, ask your dentist before you swap.

Boka sells about a dozen flavors, and every one shares the same base: nano-hydroxyapatite, xylitol, and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate as the cleanser. Boka says the whole range is free of fluoride, SLS, parabens and artificial dyes.

This review reads the labels and the maker pages, not a test tube. Everything below comes from Boka’s published ingredient lists, the EU safety opinion on the ingredient, and the maker pages for Davids and RiseWell.

Is Boka toothpaste safe?

The ingredient has been reviewed by a regulator: in March 2023 the final opinion of the EU’s SCCS concluded that nano-hydroxyapatite is safe at up to 10% in toothpaste. That covers the mineral, not Boka’s specific tube.

Boka does not publish how much hydroxyapatite is in each tube, so you cannot check it against that ceiling. Boka also states that n-Ha is biocompatible and that its kids tubes suit children who are learning to brush.

Does Boka toothpaste have fluoride?

No. Boka says every toothpaste it sells is fluoride-free, including the Sensitive tube, which relies on 5% potassium nitrate for sensitivity.

That is the first of three things Boka does not do. Fluoride has the longer evidence record for preventing cavities, and our breakdown of nano-hydroxyapatite vs fluoride lays out what is and is not established for each.

The second is a stated percentage: the Boka pages list hydroxyapatite in the ingredients but give no concentration, and no abrasivity (RDA) figure either. The third is an ADA Seal claim, which none of the Boka pages we read make.

Which hydroxyapatite toothpaste is different from Boka?

RiseWell is the clearest contrast, because its Original line uses 10% micro-hydroxyapatite where Boka and Davids use the nano form.

RiseWell also states its percentage and leaves out sarcosinate-type cleansers, which Boka uses. Davids says it uses rod-shaped nano-hydroxyapatite and lists the lowest price in the table at $10.95.

Boka sells a kids line in 4 oz tubes with the same fluoride-free n-Ha base. Use a pea-sized amount, and ask your child's dentist whether a fluoride-free paste fits their cavity risk.

How long does one Boka tube last?

At a pea-sized 0.5 g, twice a day, a 4 oz tube of about 113 g lasts roughly 113 days. The 0.5 g dose is an assumption, so weigh your own and use the calculator above.
